Market Watch Basics
Welcome to Lesson 2 of the Second Module on MT4 from PROP365 Academy. In this tutorial, we’ll break down the market watch window, an essential feature of MetaTrader 4. You’ll learn what it is, how to manage symbols and quotes, and how to view bid prices graphically.
What Is the Market Watch Window?
The window sits at the top-left corner of the MT4 platform. It displays all available trading instruments and their real-time quotes from your broker.
To see the full list of symbols and quotes:
- Right-click anywhere in the market watch panel.
- Select “Show All” to reveal every symbol your broker offers.
Managing Charts
You have two ways to display a chart for a specific instrument:
- Right-click the symbol, then choose Chart Window to open a new chart.
- Left-click and drag the symbol into the chart area.
Each instrument displays two prices:
- Bid price
- Ask price
These real-time values are essential for executing trades efficiently.
Server Time and Quote Updates
In the top-left corner of the market watch window frame, you’ll see the server time, usually shown as GMT+2.
By right-clicking the panel, you can open a menu with several advanced features:
- Time: Shows the last update time of a quote for the selected symbol.
- High/Low: Displays the high and low values recorded during a specific minute for any instrument.
Tick Chart Options in Market Watch
Want to see a visual representation of bid prices? MT4 provides three ways to access the tick chart:
- Right-click any symbol > choose Tick Chart from the dropdown.
- Press the Spacebar on your keyboard.
- Click “Tick Chart” at the bottom of the market watch window.
These views help you analyze short-term price fluctuations in real time.
