What Is a Cold Wallet and Why You Need One

Welcome to Lesson 6 of the Cryptocurrencies series at PROP365 Academy: Backups & Offline Storage – Why Is It Important, How To Do It. In this lesson, you’ll learn what a cold wallet is, why cold storage matters, and how to implement it securely to protect your digital assets.

Why Cold Wallets Matter

Cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, are digital assets that can be directly stored on your computer. This makes them vulnerable to theft through internet-connected systems. Even with layers of protection, modern operating systems leak data without your consent. Unlike traditional bank accounts, crypto wallets require users to take full responsibility for their own security.

A cold wallet — also known as a cold storage wallet — is a way to store your crypto assets offline, disconnected from the internet. This significantly reduces the risk of theft from malware or remote attackers.
